Because fuck women. That’s why.

Well, that’s the short version, yes. In the long version, its because there’s still a significant subsection of this country that doesn’t believe that there’s really such a thing as domestic abuse. At the bookstore I work at, every day, I sell books that push the viewpoint of women needing to be submissive in all things, because that’s how God wants it. These books, which I sell several of every week, put forth the idea that if a woman gets smacked by her husband, it’s because she didn’t serve him well enough. 

Yes, yes, “because fuck women.” But the glib answer glosses over the real fact is that we still promote domestic abuse. And quite a few of those promoters belong to the conservative base of parties like the GOP. So why should they pass a bill that helps domestic abuse survivors? They don’t believe there really was abuse.
